Open Call · Vol. 11
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know before submitting your project to the creAtIva Vol. 11 open call.
Registration and project submission
How do I register?
Registration will be completed through an online form. The participation guidelines, instructions, and all the necessary fields to submit the project correctly will be available in that same form.
Where can I read the conditions?
In the registration form itself. They will not be hidden, spread across different posts, or require you to search for additional information elsewhere.
Do I have to read the conditions before participating?
Yes. Submitting a proposal means that you have read and accepted the conditions stated in the form.
About the concept of the open call
What is the theme of creAtIva Vol.11?
The theme of creAtIva Vol.11 is MIND: Between Stimulus and Consciousness. The open call proposes exploring the mind as a creative, emotional, perceptive, bodily, social, and technological territory.
What does “what happens before the image” mean?
It means that every image is born before it becomes visible. Before an image, there may be an idea, a memory, a perception, an obsession, a fear, a desire, or an inner experience that has not yet taken visual form.
Do I have to represent the mind literally?
No. The open call is not looking for literal representations of the brain or predictable images about intelligence.
So what is it really looking for?
It is looking for projects capable of making visible what happens inside us, as well as what, from the outside, modifies our mental experience.
Does the project have to be about psychology?
It can be, but it does not have to approach psychology from a clinical or academic perspective. The proposal may address the mind from an emotional, symbolic, perceptive, bodily, social, technological, or narrative point of view.
Does the project have to be about artificial intelligence?
Not necessarily. Artificial intelligence can be used as a tool, a language, an interlocutor, an archive, or a system of interpretation, but the project does not have to be about technology.
So can I use AI even if my work is not about AI?
Yes. The core of the proposal should be the idea and the way each artist transforms a mental process, a psychological experience, or a contemporary condition into a coherent visual proposal.
What kind of projects fit within MIND / MENTE?
Projects may address, among other territories, memory, forgetting, dreams, the unconscious, imagination, identity, doubling, the transformation of the self, perception, the body, the environment, consciousness, hyperconnectivity, stimulus overload, digital spaces, algorithms, emotional fragility, or possible forms of care.
Can I work with memory and recollection?
Yes. Memory, forgetting, and the reconstruction of the past are possible territories within the open call.
Can I work with dreams or the unconscious?
Yes. Dreams, the unconscious, and imagination are completely valid lines of work within the concept.
Can I work with identity?
Yes. Identity, doubling, the transformation of the self, and the construction of identity within digital spaces are possible approaches to the project.
Can I work with altered perception or visual saturation?
Yes. Perception, its alterations, stimulus overload, and perceptive saturation are part of the conceptual framework of the open call.
Can I address the relationship between mind and body?
Yes. The relationship between mind, body, and environment is one of the possible territories of Vol.11.
Can I work with social media, screens, or algorithms?
Yes, as long as the project does not simply represent technology in a superficial way. What matters is observing how networks, interfaces, algorithms, and digital environments influence what we think, feel, and remember, or the way we construct our identity.
Is the open call about the internet?
Not exclusively. Digital connection can be understood as an ecology of stimuli, relationships, images, and systems that affect the body, attention, perception, and mental health. But the project can go far beyond the internet or screens.
Can I submit a more intimate or emotional work?
Yes. The mind is presented as an intimate space, but also as one shaped by culture, society, relationships, memory, digital environments, and the systems that condition the way we think, feel, and relate to one another.
Does the proposal have to be critical?
It can be critical, experimental, poetic, emotional, narrative, visual, or conceptual. What matters is that it dialogues with the concept of MIND in a clear and coherent way.
Do I have to explain literally what each image means?
It is not necessary to explain each image literally. What matters is that the project has a recognizable idea and that the images build a visual proposal that is coherent with that idea.
What will be especially valued in relation to the concept?
Proposals will be especially valued for their ability to dialogue critically, experimentally, or reflectively with the concept MIND: Between Stimulus and Consciousness, as well as for their capacity to build their own visual and conceptual identity.
What question should I ask myself before submitting my project?
What happens inside us before an image appears? What do you have in mind?
In summary, what kind of project should I submit?
A visual project that transforms a mental process, a psychological experience, a perception, a memory, an emotion, a contemporary tension, or a condition linked to the way we think and feel into a coherent artistic proposal.
The PDF
How should I submit the project images?
The images must be gathered into a single PDF file.
How many images can I submit?
A maximum of ten images must be submitted.
How many pages should the PDF have?
The PDF must have ten pages.
How many images should there be on each page?
One single image per page.
Can I place several images on the same page?
No. Each page must contain only one image.
Can I create collages or compositions with several works?
No, unless the collage or composition is a single work presented as such. A page must not be used to group several independent images.
Can the PDF include a cover page?
No independent cover page should be added. The ten pages are intended for the ten project images.
Can I include the project title inside the PDF?
No. The PDF must contain only the images.
Can I add explanatory texts, captions, or biographical information?
No. The PDF must not include texts, titles, descriptions, CVs, logos, or additional information.
Where should the written information be included, then?
All written information must be entered directly into the corresponding fields of the registration form.
What format should the PDF have?
The document must be prepared in A4 size, with free orientation: portrait or landscape.
What proportions should the images have?
The images may be vertical, horizontal, square, circular, panoramic, or have any other proportion.
Do I have to crop the images to adapt them to vertical A4?
No. The images must preserve the proportion that corresponds to the work.
What happens if an image does not fill the entire page?
The image must be placed on a white background. The areas of the page not occupied by the image must remain white.
Can I use a black, grey, or any other coloured background?
No. The background of all pages must be white whenever the image does not fill the entire space.
What is the maximum file size allowed for the PDF?
10 MB.
Can it be slightly over 10 MB?
No. The file cannot exceed 10 MB. If it does, the form will not allow you to upload it.
Why is there a 10 MB limit?
Because the PDF will be used exclusively during the first phase of registration and selection. Its purpose is to allow the jury to view and assess the project quickly, clearly, and efficiently.
Do the images have to be in maximum resolution?
No. At this first stage, they must have enough quality for the work to be properly viewed and assessed, but it is not necessary to include the original files or print-resolution images.
Can I reduce the quality a lot in order to meet the file size limit?
The file must remain under 10 MB, but the images must still be clear enough to view. They must not appear excessively pixelated, blurred, or distorted.
Is this the final submission for publication?
No. This PDF corresponds only to the registration and selection phase.
What happens if the project is selected?
Selected participants will later receive the instructions to submit the original images in high resolution and with the technical conditions required for publication.
Do I have to send the original images or download links now?
No. The original files will only be requested from selected artists.
Can I send the images separately in addition to the PDF?
